Cities suffer from increasing traffic congestion. The segregation of the urban functions of living, working and recreation is continuing to progress. The urban planning model "City of Short Distances" is intended to counteract this. The urban, mixed-use compact city life is desired by the city residents and not the one-sided concentration of individual functions. Old urban structures are to be restored. Within an autonomous urban district, the functions of living, working and recreation, short distances and a low volume of traffic should be ensured. The city of Vienna has committed itself to the idea of sustainability in its 2005 urban development plan, and the urban planning model of short distances can provide an impulse in this direction. In addition to tasks and aspirations, the urban development plan has also defined target areas.
