"The most beautiful rock in the world" may sound a little presumptuous, but the colourfulness of the Allalin gabbro, its diversity and the fact that it only occurs in one place in the world - on the Allalinhorn - makes the Allalin gabbro something very special. It shows us a fascinating history of its formation during the formation of the Alps, combined with a rapid descent to great depths and an equally rapid ascent. This also makes it an exciting object of research. During the ice ages, large quantities of the rock reached far into the Central Plateau as erratic blocks and boulders and still indicate the extent of the Valais glacier today as a "guiding rock". The Allalin gabbro was a valued material for stone axes for the Stone Age people; today it is very popular as a jewellery stone.
