Henry Chinasky (alias Bukowski) does not belong to the privileged in America. His father leaves the house promptly every morning so that the neighbors don't notice he is unemployed. At school, Henry Chinasky is known as the "sauerkraut eater." There, he quickly learns to keep his fists up when others come at him. He cannot hold back when others brag about having "done it" with women, and he knows that he will have to struggle as an outsider for the rest of his life.
