The normal derives its meaning from the existence of something that provokes it: the abnormal. In this tension, child and adolescent psychiatry emerged in the 20th century. This anthology provides the first overview of the history of this young discipline in Switzerland. The pioneers drew on psychology and pediatrics while simultaneously responding to the socio-political demand to shape minors in a way that they could integrate into society. The volume focuses on institutions (outpatient clinics and observation units), individuals (child psychiatrists), and therapeutic methods (depth psychology and pharmacology).
