Modern art has, since Romanticism - according to Eco's thesis - embraced incompleteness, the fragment, and the open artwork as its program. Certain tendencies in contemporary art, such as attempts to involve the audience as creators in the art scene or to encourage interpreters to engage in creative production by providing them with score parts from the composer in the manner of a collage that they can combine at their discretion, realize the aesthetics or poetics of the open artwork in a particularly radical way. In the second part of his book, Eco exemplifies his theory through the poetics of Joyce.
