Das Museum Rietberg Zürich und Elsy Leuzinger

Under Elsy Leuzinger's leadership, the Rietberg Museum in Zurich became a complex and internationally connected institution. The collection was significantly expanded thanks to major donors and selective acquisitions. Furthermore, Leuzinger activated the Rietberg Society, co-founded ICOM Switzerland, and simultaneously established the art history of East Asia at the University of Zurich. This volume provides new insights into the work of the Zurich pioneer by evaluating sources from various archives for the first time. Heidi Tacier-Eugster traces how Elsy Leuzinger became an art ethnologist and scientifically processed the collection objects. In doing so, the author highlights both European and Swiss knowledge and cultural history, as well as the position of women in the 20th century.
