Das Lied der Tausend Stiere

The Turkish nomads of the Karaçullu tribe have been descending from the mountains into the plains for centuries in search of winter quarters. But where they once flooded the plains with hundreds of tents, shining and admired in their wealth, now rice fields and cotton plantations stretch to the horizon. Where they once grazed their herds, settled farmers now cultivate the land, and trucks roar along paved roads. They are met with hailstones and volleys of gunfire. Landowners, corrupt village policemen, and double-tongued agas extort new tributes from them daily, until they finally have nothing left to sell but their precious carpets, the centuries-old jewelry of their women, and ultimately their last possession – their herds.
