At the beginning of the 20th century in northern Germany. Ruven Preuk, the youngest son of the wheelwright, possesses an extraordinary musical talent even as a child: he sees sounds, and on his violin, he plays strange melodies. This not only earns him admiration in the village. Eventually, the old Preuk realizes that there is nothing to be done with his son. In desperation, he tries to beat the sounds out of him. Then he lets him go. In the city, Ruven learns from the Jew Goldbaum, in whose granddaughter Rahel he falls in love just as much as with the belief in a brilliant career. Art means freedom and recognition, but the Nazis are already aiming their guns. Just as his breakthrough is about to happen, World War II drags Germany into the abyss. And Ruven must once again find his way at the end of all melodies. With "The Last Land," Svenja Leiber presents a powerful novel.
