Das Krähennest

Martina Wied was born in Vienna in 1882 and died there in 1957. She was a contributor to the Innsbruck cultural magazine "Der Brenner." After an early poetry collection, her first novel "Rauch über Sanct Florian" was published in 1936. In 1939, she fled to England. She earned her living as a teacher and wrote four more novels, including the monumental Bildungsroman "Die Geschichte des reichen Jünglings." She returned to Austria in 1947. In 1952, she became the first woman to receive the Grand Austrian State Prize for Literature. "Das Krähennest" was first published in 1951 by Herder Verlag. Evelyne Polt-Heinzl was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Literary Criticism in 2017. As a literary historian, she has repeatedly highlighted authors who have been unjustly forgotten and has reissued a number of books, including works by Joe Lederer, Annemarie Selinko, Walter Toman, and more recently by Oskar Jan Tauschinski, Friederike Manner, and Hans Flesch-Brunningen.
