Product details
First study edition of "Capital, Vol. 1," which follows the text of the Marx-Engels Complete Works (MEGA). This edition offers the text of the first edition from 1867, as well as an appendix containing the revised version of the first chapter from the second edition of 1872, which Marx himself oversaw. The editor's commentary re-establishes the text, long regarded as a cornerstone of Marxism, among the central and significant works of the philosophical tradition. Marx's program of a "Critique of Political Economy" remains socially and philosophically relevant. Under the title "Capital," Karl Marx presented the first book of the first volume on the "Production Process of Capital" in 1867 during his lifetime. Even in the first edition, which serves as the basis for this new study edition, there is an appendix written by Marx in which he aimed to present the first chapter more clearly. A further developed version of this appendix provides the first chapter in the second edition of 1872, which is also included here. The background of these modifications is that Marx organized his theory of value using philosophical categories and models derived from Hegel's philosophy. The focus of the editor's commentary is on presenting the philosophical dimension of Marx's theoretical development. It begins by explaining the paths of Marx's reception of Hegel and the systematic connections between Marx's early writings and "Capital." Furthermore, a commentary identifies and explicates the central philosophical categories and theorems of Marx's main work. Thus, this new edition not only makes the continuity of Marx's thought visible but also clarifies that Marx's critique of political economy is a philosophical program deeply committed to Hegel's dialectical philosophy.
