Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the Western world. Is stress to blame, poor nutrition, psychological misprogramming, or even harmful microorganisms? Before industrialization, heart diseases in the modern sense were hardly known. Plants that acted on the mental and emotional level and brought joy back to the heart served as heart medicine. In addition to these ancient heart plants, the herbal remedies of modern cardiology are also presented, such as foxglove, lily of the valley, or strophanthus. A holistic view of the highly relevant topic of heart issues is presented from anthropological, ethnomedical, ethnobotanical, and folkloric perspectives.
