What is actually a good picture?
Image criticism for photographers is not easy, especially the critical analysis of one's own work.
David duChemin asks the right questions about it
The guide to stronger and more authentic images
Is this picture good? What criteria do I actually use to evaluate my own work? And how do others see it? These are questions that every photographer asks himself when reviewing his images - and often remains at a loss. Image criticism is not easy, a critical analysis of one's own work even more difficult. Rules, formulas or recipes do not really help to get to the core of the question: What exactly is a good image?
David duChemin doesn't answer this question in his book either, doesn't provide recipes for the "good picture" - he asks questions. Questions like "Where is the story?", "What about balance and tension?", "What role does light play?", "How do the lines guide the viewer's gaze?", questions that should help the photographer to better understand images, to recognize their quality. But they should also help him to control the creative process of photography more consciously and to improve the quality of his work.
But duChemin doesn't just ask questions. He explains, he illustrates with his own pictures, the meaning of his questions, where the path leads, which he shows the reader with this book: To stronger and more authentic images.
