Product details

The book explores the question of which stressors in interaction contexts must be considered developmental risks from the perspective of children of parents with depression, how these stressors are managed, and how the relationships between stressors and coping behaviors are represented. As part of a qualitative study, interviews were conducted with children aged 6 to 12 years and their depressed parents. The results show that stressors within the framework of familial socialization interactions dominate the subjective experiences of the affected children. These socialization stressors often manifest as psychological stress for the children of depressed parents and are met with various coping efforts. Depending on whether the stressors are assessed as harm, threat, or challenge in primary appraisal processes, their influence on vulnerability varies, which is also determined by available resources. Children's coping behaviors are context-dependent and can either reduce or increase risk.
