After the end of World War II, Berlin became a bone of contention between the former allies USA, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union. The construction of the Wall in August 1961 cemented the division of the city before the eyes of the world, a division that had begun in 1945 with the partition into four sectors and continued until German reunification in 1990. For more than four decades, Berlin was a symbol of the Cold War.
