North Rhine-Westphalia was founded by the British occupying power in 1946. Today, NRW is, as they say in short, the most populous federal state in Germany. Social life here in the west of the republic is colourful in the truest sense. Folk festivals, local delicacies, countless sports clubs, theatres, museums and book publishers stand for NRW's tradition, cultural diversity and intact infrastructure. But the state also has its problem areas: The comparatively high unemployment rate corresponds with unequally distributed educational opportunities and a large gap between rich and poor.
