"I have traveled to Burma several dozen times since 1995, and during my research for my novels 'The Heart's Listening' and 'Heart Voices', I was repeatedly told fairy tales and fables. On one hand, these were moving stories that spoke of the mythological richness of the various peoples of Burma, of the spirituality of the people, and how deeply Buddhist thought has shaped society over centuries. Others were so foreign and bizarre that they lacked a discernible moral, making them difficult for me to categorize. Still, others reminded me of the fairy tales of my childhood, except that here monkeys, tigers, elephants, and crocodiles populated the fantasy world instead of hedgehogs, donkeys, or geese. The lessons they aimed to convey are similar to those of the Brothers Grimm or Hans Christian Andersen, and I understood how much all cultures draw from the universal reservoir of human wisdom in their myths."
