Fifteen historians from thirteen European countries present the first cross-border history book of European format. In their outstanding work, they historically situate both old and new Europe and outline its guiding principles for the 21st century.

Europe has always been subject to a process of constant change – from the first settlements, through the Greek and Roman antiquity, the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Enlightenment, to modern times. The fifteen authors address European history in its entirety from a variety of perspectives. They all contribute to the history of the Other, the neighbor, whether geographically close or distant, whether a former enemy or an occasionally difficult friend. This provides the reader with a unique panorama that unfolds in the spirit of European tolerance.
