Author's Note
Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was born in Bombay but grew up in Britain, as was common at the time. At the age of 17, he returned to India and began working as a journalist for Anglo-Indian newspapers. His literary career started in 1886 with short stories. By the time the Jungle Books were published (1894/95), he was already one of the most famous living writers in Britain. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907 at the age of just 42.
