Even though the theater god Dionysus had a penchant for metamorphosis and transformed into an animal before the eyes of the audience, the stage has operated for centuries within a social cosmos predominantly inhabited by members of the Homo sapiens species. Today, ecological disasters signal the end of anthropocentrism. This emerging planetary age presents the theater with entirely new challenges. "The Drama of the Anthropocene" reflects the tectonic shifts that the Anthropocene, the first intersection of earth and human history, brings to the stage, casting traditional motifs in a new light and paving the way for future conceptualizations. In addition to his essay, the volume also includes a conversation between Frank-M. Raddatz and Antje Boetius, director of the Alfred Wegener Institute, and science historian Hans-Jörg Rheinberger.
