One does not ask a trivial question when considering why compounded medicines were invented at all, if every strength contained in the compounded remedies can also be found in the simple ones. The "Circa instans," the first major Western pharmacopoeia, poses and answers this question. In 252 chapters, a member of the Platearius family in Salerno discusses the medicinal substances commonly used in the 12th century. The influence of this foundational work extends into modern times, and it is being presented to the public here for the first time in German translation.
