The Cassis de Dijon principle is a central structural instrument of EU internal market law. Products that are lawfully marketed in one member state can be distributed and sold in all other EU member states. Restrictions are only permitted under strict conditions. The European Court of Justice (ECJ) first recognised the Cassis de Dijon principle in 1979, and has continued to develop the principle ever since.
