J.R.R. Tolkien wrote countless stories as he recorded the tales of the gods and heroes of Middle-earth. They are documented in the legendary book The Book of Lost Tales, Tolkien's oldest world design, even older than The Silmarillion. Often, traces of these stories can be found, with foreign-sounding names echoing like distant memories in The Lord of the Rings, the great completed fantasy epic.

The ten stories about the Valar and the founding of their sea kingdom, Ilúvatar and his world plan, the arrival of the Elves, and the construction of Kôr are narrated to the mariner Eriol on the Lonely Island, depicting the primordial and early times of Middle-earth.
