She flees to England, where she manages to survive as a servant and later runs a refugee home for Jewish girls. Through cooking lessons, she tries to distract her charges from the turmoil of war. After the war, Alice moves to New York, teaches cooking classes in San Francisco, and showcases her best recipes for pastries and tafelspitz on American television. In a Viennese bookstore, she even finds her book again. But who is the man whose name appears on the cover? Did the master chef Rudolf Rösch ever exist? Research leads Alice's granddaughter Karina Urbach into archives in Vienna, London, and Washington, where she discovers long-lost letters, audio tapes, and film documents. They reveal a previously unknown chapter in the history of German Nazi crimes.
