Anniversary Publication of the Belvedere

In 1777, the Belvedere became one of the world's first public museums, shaping the museum world and art history with its organizational principle based on schools. The founding intention of the Modern Gallery in 1903, to present Austrian art in an international context, continues to define its programmatic direction to this day.

This publication makes new research on the history of the museum accessible: What organizational concepts are evident in the exhibitions? Which audience was addressed? And what narratives and mechanisms of inclusion/exclusion can be identified?
