The formal language of the living: Rudolf Steiner's building projects around the Goetheanum
The building history of the Goetheanum has already been analysed in the first volume of the Architectural Works. The second part now documents all the other building projects in which Rudolf Steiner was involved. It deals with the ancillary buildings of the Goetheanum that were functionally connected to the main building, such as the boiler house and the studio set up for grinding the glass windows (both 1914).
Other projects in the Dornach neighbourhood include the Duldeck House (1915), the Vreede House (1919), the Blommestein House (1919) and the de Jaager House (1921) as well as three staff houses (1920). The remodelling of Brodbeck House, whose extension for eurythmy anticipates the forms of the second Goetheanum (1924), the publishing house (1924) and the wooden house built for Ita Wegman near the Arlesheim clinic (1924) are documented.
The projects are presented in the context in which they were created, so that the chronological and conceptual connections become just as clear as the stylistic development of the anthroposophical building impulse. Richly illustrated with sketches, models and plans, this volume illustrates the wealth of ideas with which Rudolf Steiner inspired a new type of architectural design.
