The photographs of Heinrich Zille (1858–1929), who became popular with his drawings of the Berlin "millieu," are today classics of photographic history. They are among the earliest testimonies of the social documentary genre in Germany. Berlin street and market scenes, backyards, pubs, and fairgrounds, as well as studies of women collecting firewood and nude studies – "old Berlin" has found in Heinrich Zille the outstanding visual chronicler of its everyday history.
