The equivalence principle is fundamental to the general theory of relativity and to our current understanding of space and time. Furthermore, existing approaches to a theory of quantum gravity predict slight violations of the equivalence principle, making its tests a search for experimental signatures of such a quantum gravity theory. In this essential work, the authors clearly present the conceptual foundations of the equivalence principle, provide an overview of all possible testing methods, and thoroughly describe the latest and best test that took place on a satellite in space. Suggestions for even better tests are also discussed.
