Darstellung und Übersetzung des Québecer Frz. in 'Der vierzehnte Stein'

Linguistic varieties in literature are nothing special - whether they are specialized languages, registers, dialects, or other diatopic varieties. They reflect the reality in which many people are different and individual, standing out from the norm. For this reason, many authors make use of linguistic varieties. Some choose to do so consciously, while others do so unconsciously. The crime writer Fred Vargas likely falls into the former category. The French author wrote 'Sous les vents de Neptune' in French, but set part of the story in Quebec, an area where a diatopic variety of French is spoken. Immediately, many questions arise before reading: How does she deal with the linguistic differences? What position does she take in the linguistic conflict between France and Quebec? And can she, as a Frenchwoman with no contact with Quebec, accurately and realistically portray the language of the people there? Since Fred Vargas is also a widely read author in this country, this novel has been translated as well. The translator has taken on this challenging task. Here too, many questions are raised: How does she translate this linguistic variation into German, for which there is no equivalent situation in Germany and German-speaking regions? Does she translate it at all?.
