Vetus Latina, or 'Old Latin Bible,' is the collective term for the large and highly diverse group of Latin biblical texts that have been in use since the 2nd century in Christian communities. With the spread and triumph of Christianity in the Roman Empire, Latin increasingly supplanted Greek as the lingua franca—both in North Africa and in Spain, England, Gaul, and Germania. This led to the emergence of a multitude of quite different, often imprecise, and previously unauthorized Bible translations by the Church, which are scientifically edited in the Vetus Latina edition.
