Little Erika is an "occupation child." Her mother comes from a small Bavarian town, her father, an African-American soldier, is ordered back to the States before she is born. At age seven, Erika is shipped off to a children's home by the Youth Welfare Office, where she is subjected to the tyrannical and racist methods of Sister Hildegard -- and even survives an exorcism. The adult Ika is in her late thirties when she first encounters other Afro-Germans. Years later, she sets out to find her biological father and embarks on her first trip to the United States.
