The use of brushless DC motors is increasing in many areas to take advantage of their benefits in speed control. They are replacing both induction and DC machines in industrial applications. The main disadvantage of the conventional BLDC motor drive, which uses a diode bridge on the input side to supply the VSI inverter, is the numerous harmonics induced in the input current, which increases the total harmonic distortion and decreases the power factor. The conventional diode bridge rectifier BLDC drive also has other disadvantages in speed control, as it uses high-frequency switching of the VSI inverter for speed regulation, which increases losses and further reduces the efficiency of the drive. Additionally, more sensors are required for speed control, which raises the costs of the drive. To overcome these disadvantages of conventional diode bridge drives, a canonical switched cell converter BLDC drive is used, where a CSC converter is inserted between the diode bridge and the VSI inverter, contributing to the improvement of power quality at the input grid and controlling the speed by varying the DC link voltage of the CSC.
