Comix!

With its position between art and popular culture and the connection of succinct text and image messages, comics provide ideal conditions for their appropriation in posters. Using contemporary examples, the exhibition traces the roots of comics in poster design. Japanese woodblock printing, Art Nouveau, and Pop Art have each influenced comics in their own way. In the Russian Rosta windows of the 1920s, pointed visual narratives were already used to effectively disseminate social content. To this day, designers utilize the thematic and formal aspects of comics—vivid colors, stereotypes, and starkness in drawing, as well as reduction in mimetic and gestural vocabulary—to convey urgent messages. Posters for cultural events exhibit a great stylistic diversity and further demonstrate the connection.
