600 years ago, the Guild of the Grimmen Lion was founded in Diessenhofen. It played a central role in the history of the city for almost 400 years thereafter. Markus Brühlmeier uses the origin and development of the guild as the basis for his history of the city of Diessenhofen: The narrative takes us from the feudal city rule of the Middle Ages through the temporary imperial freedom after 1415 to the centuries-long border situation of the city-state of Diessenhofen in relation to the Confederation. The history of the guild thus becomes part of the social history of the city. Finally, a look ahead describes the transition into the 19th and 20th centuries, when the guild loses its political influence but continues to play an important role in the city's society as a private corporation.
