"They Were Once Refugees" is an impressive collection of life stories that documents the experiences of former refugees in Switzerland. The narratives of individuals like Andreas Herczog, who fled after the Hungarian uprising in 1956, and Intisar Aden, whose family escaped the civil war in Somalia in 1990, provide deep insights into the challenges and hopes associated with fleeing. These biographies, recorded by Michael Walther, not only showcase individual fates but also the collective history of refugees from various countries such as Tibet, Chile, Vietnam, and Bosnia. Complemented by contributions from UNHCR and the Swedish Migration Agency, as well as a historical overview, the work advocates for the revival of group resettlement of refugees in Switzerland. The photographs by Jeanne Gerster add a visual dimension to the stories and highlight the social issues addressed in this work.
