What do intellectuals think about their country, the region, and the war? What has happened since the disintegration of the Yugoslav multi-ethnic state? What opportunities does the future hold? This book offers a multifaceted perspective on the past, present, and future of the Balkan region. The commitment of the 19 interviewees—journalists, poets, theater creators, lawyers, theologians, philosophers, and sociologists from Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo—covers areas such as human rights and democracy, historical reconciliation, the situation of women, culture, religion, national identity, and globalization. Through their viewpoints, the prevailing image of Europe regarding the region, which perpetuates the same clichés of violence, hatred, revenge, and war, is corrected. The numerous cross-references between the individual conversations provide a glimpse into this complexity.
