Christian Warlich – King of Tattoo Artists

The Hamburg tattoo artist Christian Warlich (1891–1964) is a pioneer of professional tattooing in the early 20th century. He is considered one of the most significant representatives of this art form and became internationally known as the "King of Tattoo Artists." Warlich actively sought international exchange and drew inspiration from the visual language of Asian tattoos as well as American motifs. He was notable not only for his ambition to professionalize tattooing but also for his craftsmanship and a certain artistic standard. Christian Warlich's design album is arguably the most famous document in the history of German tattooing. To this day, his main work serves as an inspiration for tattoo artists worldwide – a reference for all those who are passionate about Western traditional tattoos or Warlich's powerful artistic signature.
