Italy was and is a longing destination for many Germans. Travellers to Italy enjoy the cultural history of the country, the beaches, the climate as well as the great food, but if you look behind the beautiful backdrop of the historic old towns and magnificent landscapes, you often encounter the other side of Italy: dissatisfaction with one's own country, poverty, chaos, environmental pollution, mafia and violence as well as a corrupt, decadent political system. In his photographic journeys from the south to the north of the country, photographer Christian Jungeblodt (*1962), who himself lived in Italy for a long time, makes visible the proximity of beauty and ugliness, of glamour and dirt, of sublimity and abyss. The photo book with many colour photographs and mobile phone photos in black and white is accompanied by essays by renowned authors such as Petra Reski and John Hooper.
