When comparing the years 1989 and 1990, it becomes evident that they are remembered very differently in collective memory. Most people can quickly recall the year 1989. Even with nearly thirty years of distance, it is easy to recount the sequence of events from that autumn—everything condensed into a few, highly dramatic weeks. In contrast, 1990 appears in memory like a blind spot. The memory, challenged by the overwhelming events as well as by unfulfilled desires and unacknowledged grievances, struggles to encompass such a year. "Uncovering the Year 1990" deals with the various aspects of 1990 and their relevance today. It combines visual documents and voices from the year 1990 with essayistic reflections and stories that look back on that year from the perspective of the present.
