The results of this review should be interpreted with caution. SFA may be a viable alternative to COA and could lead to a shorter postoperative orthodontic treatment time. However, the authors found a high degree of heterogeneity among the SR, with most of them showing a low level of evidence. In the overall assessment of quality of life, we can conclude that the surgical-orthognathic approach demonstrably leads to an immediate improvement in quality of life and avoids the deterioration caused by preoperative treatment as well as the inconveniences of a lengthy preoperative orthodontic treatment, although the results should be better validated by further studies with a larger patient group. Until now, any skeletal and/or occlusal condition that could jeopardize the clinical outcome was initially considered a contraindication for surgical intervention. However, computer vision, virtual orthodontic setups, three-dimensional analyses, and computer-aided design – the computer-assisted production of intraoperative splints – can help the surgeon and orthodontist better predict the extent of cytoskeletal correction.
