This is illuminated in Asmi Bishara's literary debut "Checkpoint," which consists of nearly sixty mostly shorter chapters that together create a comprehensive mosaic. It depicts how the checkpoint state (Israel) has established a systematic network of checkpoints in the checkpoint land (Gaza Strip and West Bank) through which the occupiers can better monitor the occupied. The checkpoint system is omnipresent for both sides: "The checkpoint is in the hearts of the people. It is in their eyes. The checkpoint connects and separates them." Whether it’s the daily commute, a wedding or a funeral, the taxi system or media interest, or political debate among Israeli leftists or resignation.
