Human nature is evident everywhere, just like in ancient Greece. There were already petty neighbors who constantly peered suspiciously over their fences. Those who incessantly complained about the weather, whether it was cool or warm and sunny. Theophrastus took them all to task: the miser, the snob, the charlatan, the self-important, and 26 other types. In brief character sketches, he portrays them so vividly that the reader feels transported to 4th century BC Athens – and may even find themselves recognized in one or another character and feel caught out.
