In the rich history of the reception of this work, Martin von Wagner (1777-1858) holds a unique position: no other artist has engaged with the Iliad in such an intense manner and over such a long period as this German-Roman from Würzburg. In addition to studies of antiquity, archival sources, and the preparation of the monumental painting "Council of the Greeks before Troy," the exhibition "Inventing Antiquity" presents a large selection from Wagner's approximately 700 drawings of the Iliad and explores his approach between appropriation and reinvention.
