In a tobacco factory in Seville, Carmen encounters the young guard Don José and warns him not to fall in love with her. However, he cannot resist her charms and passion. She mocks his plan to start a new life with her in America and pushes him away to preserve her freedom. Don José, in despair, takes her life and is punished with death for it. Mérimée's "Carmen" is one of the most powerful narrative texts in French literature. It was, among other things, the basis for the most famous opera by Georges Bizet, which brought the character worldwide fame.
