Surviving and Coping with the Long-Term Effects of Cancer
Approximately 492,000 Germans are diagnosed with cancer for the first time each year. 64% of those affected are still alive five years later and are referred to as "Cancer Survivors." This book is dedicated to them, written by psychologist Cordelia Galgut, who herself battled breast cancer and now works in counseling. She debunks the "lucky to survive" myth and shows that not all survivors feel better after treatment and recovery. She gives a voice to all those who have been affected by cancer and who feel negated and belittled by the common narratives surrounding "Cancer Survivors." She describes the physical and psychological side effects as well as the long-term consequences of tumor diseases on relationships and work, and how those affected cope with them. Through examples from patients and statements from caregivers and doctors, she illustrates how healthcare professionals can support those affected. She builds bridges for friends and family to openly discuss the situation with those impacted. The book aims to alleviate the lives of people with cancer and their suffering from late effects. The German edition is supplemented by contributions from oncology nursing specialists, who describe the role of nursing in supporting Cancer Survivors and demonstrate how nursing professionals can assist patients in managing symptoms of fatigue, anxiety, cognitive decline, bone loss, lymphedema, powerlessness and hopelessness, neuropathies, recurrences, sexuality, sleep disturbances, pain, and wounds.
