Everyone knows the cheeky little boy Calvin and his philosophizing big stuffed tiger Hobbes. They are funny because their creator, Bill Watterson, loves them no matter what nonsense they get up to and how much they annoy everyone else. They are timeless because they stumble over the same stones as all little and big explorers. They are tireless, fearless, cheeky, inventive, curious, and uncomfortable. They are not like us, but if we're lucky, a little bit of their essence rubs off on us while reading. The best part of this strip's success story is that it proves that a brilliant artistic achievement and success do not always have to be mutually exclusive.
