Micha Brumlik interprets the depth psychology of C.G. Jung (1875-1961) as a romantic theory of the unconscious, makes its philosophical references visible, and examines its origins in belief in spirits. Because Jung distinguishes between a linguistically constituted way of thinking and an imagistic, symbolic way of thinking, his theory of archetypes holds particular significance. In this revised version of the introduction, Brumlik illustrates it through characters from Richard Wagner's musical dramas. The attempt to provide a sociobiological and structuralist interpretation of the theory of archetypes is further deepened.
