Bach/Busoni - this combination makes the hearts of pianists race. Busoni succeeds in transferring even those works of Bach that were originally written for other instruments to the piano in such a way that the original sound world becomes perceptible while allowing the concert grand to showcase its full potential. His transcription of the organ Toccata in D minor BWV 565 (which, after some uncertainty, is now regarded as an authentic work of Bach) was intended to conclude his series of Bach arrangements for Breitkopf & Härtel in 1900, alongside the C major Toccata BWV 564. From Busoni's perspective, this was a worthy conclusion, as the Toccatas were - as he informed his publisher - clearly the best I was able to achieve in this genre, and I believe I can promise a strong impact from them. The G. Henle Verlag agrees with this assessment and publishes the famous D minor Toccata and Fugue in an attractive urtext edition that draws on all available sources and features the fingering of the exceptional pianist Marc-André Hamelin.
