The volume describes the status of the early modern German empire as a reference system for the debates on federalism in the emerging USA in a strong fundamental analysis and a series of explanatory essays that work with evidence and case studies. Jürgen Overhoff, Volker Depkat and Johannes Burkhardt analyse development processes in British-colonial and revolutionary America in their imperial and transatlantic contexts, from the beginnings in the 17th century, through the Declaration of Independence, to the founding of the United States. In this way, it becomes clear that the revolutionary USA did not manage without recourse to European constitutional orders. In the context of a transatlantic constitutional discourse in which William Penn, Baron de Montesquieu, Benjamin Franklin, Johann Stephan Pütter, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison participated, the organisation of the German Empire, which was conceived as a "confederate republic", served to clarify its own positions.
