Bulimia nervosa

Bulimia nervosa is a difficult disorder to treat, especially in adolescents and young adults. This volume presents a manualised psychodynamic approach to the treatment of this disorder in this patient group. The clinical picture of bulimia nervosa, epidemiology, comorbidity, physical consequences as well as personality and developmental factors are presented by way of introduction. After an overview of common psychotherapeutic models of the development of bulimia nervosa, the psychodynamic understanding of the illness on which this manual is based is presented in detail. The detailed presentation of the individual treatment steps illustrates the specific disorder-orientated approach at the structural, conflict and relationship levels. The treatment of the respective focal points is illustrated using practical examples and intervention options are shown. A detailed case description outlines an exemplary course of treatment. The procedure described is designed for depth psychology-based psychotherapy lasting approx. 60 hours, but can also be used in shorter or longer therapies. The effectiveness has been empirically proven in a randomised controlled comparative study.
