Prussian soldiers are hunting for a deserter. When they overpower him, they are quite astonished: the fugitive reveals herself to be a woman. This historically documented case intrigues King Ludwig II of Bavaria 160 years later, as well as his handsome doctor Carl Müller. While Ludwig faces the threat of being dethroned, the two explore the outrageous life of Anastasius Rosenstengel - whose real name was Catharina Link, sentenced to death for her fabricated life. Two people living double lives form the framework of Angela Steidele's debut novel: Catharina Linck, who disguised herself as Anastasius Rosenstengel and navigated life in men's clothing in the early 18th century, and Ludwig II, who fled from politics into the world of art.
